The Air Jordan 4: A Streetwear Icon
The Air Jordan 4 (AJ4), first released in 1989 and designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield, is one of the most culturally significant and beloved sneakers of all time.
It was the second Jordan model designed by Hatfield and was revolutionary for blending on-court performance with a striking aesthetic that quickly crossed over into streetwear.
Key Features
• Signature Mesh Netting: The use of over-moulded mesh panels on the side and tongue was a first for the line, drastically improving breathability.
• Supportive "Wings": The distinctive plastic triangular support wings not only provide enhanced stability but also created a unique lacing system, allowing for a highly customised fit.
• Visible Air: It retained the visible Air-Sole unit in the heel for cushioning, a hallmark feature carried over from the AJ3.
• Iconic Moments: The shoe was immortalised when Michael Jordan wore the 'Bred' colourway to hit "The Shot" in the 1989 playoffs. It also famously featured in Spike Lee's film, Do The Right Thing.
Today, the AJ4 remains highly coveted, appearing in countless high-profile collaborations (like Travis Scott, KAWS, A Ma Maniére) and retaining its status as a symbol of luxury, sport history, and high fashion.
